James and Mitchell debate health care, tariffs and Iran

· 2 min read

Democrat Lindsay James and Republican Joe Mitchell split over health coverage and tariffs in their October 8 Iowa PBS debate for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District.

Health care and retirement

Mitchell said he would repeal the Affordable Care Act while preserving preexisting-condition protections. James backed a public option. She criticized federal health-care cuts; he defended Medicaid work requirements. James warned of consequences for rural care, while Mitchell pointed to funding for rural hospitals.

Their campaign plans also differ on how to make care affordable. James proposes a Medicare buy-in starting at 55 and broader Medicare drug-price negotiations. Mitchell calls for subsidies paid directly to patients and American prescription-drug prices comparable to those in other developed countries. Both platforms advocate greater price transparency.

On Social Security, James proposed lifting the taxable earnings cap. Mitchell emphasized combating fraud and expressed openness to a commission.

Trade, war and fuel costs

Both backed state incentives for a proposed steel plant. Mitchell credited Trump’s tariffs with attracting investment; James supported the jobs while arguing tariffs were raising costs and driving manufacturing overseas.

Both supported temporary fuel-tax relief. James wanted the Iran war ended immediately and troops brought home. Mitchell wanted the war ended as soon as possible, but strategically, and criticized Democrats’ war-powers resolutions as partisan.

Energy and technology

Mitchell’s energy platform includes nuclear power, natural gas, oil and coal alongside hydroelectricity, wind and solar.

James highlighted wind, solar, hydro and biofuels. On AI, she called for safeguards protecting children, jobs and electricity customers.

On data centers, Mitchell opposed tax incentives and said developers should pay infrastructure costs.
